The most common warning sign is a high-pitched squealing sound when you apply the brakes. Most brake pads are designed with a small metal wear indicator that makes this noise on purpose — it's your vehicle telling you the pads are getting thin and need to be replaced soon.
If you hear grinding instead of squealing, that's a more serious sign. Grinding typically means the brake pads have worn completely through and metal is contacting metal. At this point, you're likely damaging your rotors as well, which significantly increases the cost of the repair.
A vibration or pulsing feeling in the brake pedal when you stop is usually a sign of warped rotors. Rotors can warp from excessive heat — often caused by heavy braking on long downhill stretches or from overheating during aggressive driving.
